Why Gutters Carry So Much Weight Here

Rain around Pflugerville does not arrive politely. A spring cell can park over Falcon Pointe or Blackhawk and drop two inches in an hour, and every square foot of your roof hands that water to the gutter at the same moment. A run that is undersized, sagging off the fascia, or pitched the wrong direction cannot take it. The water goes over the front lip in a sheet and lands in a trench right against the house.

That is where the ground under this town becomes the problem. Pflugerville sits on blackland clay, and blackland clay does not just get wet. It swells when it soaks and pulls back hard when it dries out, and a slab riding on top of that motion is what puts foundation companies to work all over the northeast side of Travis County. Every storm your gutters overflow, you are watering one corner of the house and leaving the rest dry. So the gutter is not trim. Seamless Runs, Formed at Your Curb

We roll the gutter on site, out of a coil, in one continuous piece the full length of your eave. There is no mid-run joint, which matters because the joint is where sectional gutters always give up first. Aluminum grows and shrinks all summer in Central Texas heat, and a seam that gets worked a few hundred times eventually opens and starts dripping down the fascia. A run with no seam in it has nothing to open.

We hang the run with hangers spaced for the span instead of a standard number, pitch it toward the outlets so water actually moves rather than standing in the low spot, and color match to your trim. Most of what we replace out here is builder gutter off a production home, and the story is usually the same: the gutter was fine for the price sheet and undersized for the roof.

Five Inch or Six, and Why It Depends on the Roof

Gutter sizing is not about the length of the house. It is about how much roof drains into that one run, how steep that plane is, and how fast the water gets there. A single-story ranch with a shallow pitch and a short plane does fine on a 5-inch K-style. A two-story where a long, steep upper plane dumps into a lower gutter needs 6-inch, and often a bigger downspout to go with it, because the upper roof is throwing water into that run faster than a 5-inch can carry it away.

You can usually spot an undersized run without a ladder. If one section overflows in every hard rain while the rest of the house stays fine, that section is taking more roof than it was built for. We measure the drainage area feeding each run before we quote anything, so what you get is sized to your roof rather than to whatever came standard on the street.

Downspouts Are the Half Nobody Plans

New gutter on the eave and the same old downspout arrangement below it is half a job. The downspouts decide whether the water you just collected leaves the property or gets deposited at the slab. Two things go wrong on Pflugerville homes. First, there are not enough of them: a long run with one outlet at the far end backs up in a downpour because the water cannot get out fast enough, and it spills over the middle. Second, the ones that exist end two feet from the wall, which on clay is about the worst place to put it.

The flat lots out here make it trickier, because you do not get much help from grade. Water that lands next to the house has nowhere to go on its own. So we add outlets where a long run needs them, and we carry the discharge out past the foundation with extensions or a tie-in to buried line, far enough that the soil next to your slab stays about as wet as the soil in the middle of the yard. That is the whole objective. Even moisture, no soaked corner.

Fascia First, Then Gutter

Before we hang anything we check what we are hanging it on. Years of an overflowing gutter soaks the fascia board behind it, and soft fascia will not hold a hanger no matter how good the new gutter is. It sags in a season and you are back where you started. We look at the fascia, the drip edge, and the first course of shingles as one piece of the roof, and we tell you what we find before the work starts.

The drip edge detail is the one most gutter-only outfits skip, because it is roof work. If the drip edge does not carry runoff out past the back lip of the gutter, water tracks behind the gutter and runs down the fascia and into the soffit, and you get rot in a spot where a brand new gutter is hanging perfectly straight. Being a roofing contractor is the reason we catch it.

After a Storm, Sequence Matters

Hail comes through Pflugerville with nothing on the prairie north of town to slow it down, and gutters take the beating along with the roof. Dented aluminum, a run knocked off pitch, or a downspout crushed flat is usually part of the same claim as the shingles. If the roof is getting replaced, the gutters come off first and go back on last, after the new drip edge is set. Doing it the other way means a new gutter gets pulled and rehung, or worse, it stays on and the drip edge gets fitted around it.
